The Peak Caving Club – “The Mugs”

One of our current displays explores the story of the Peak Caving Club, affectionately known by its members as “The Mugs”. Established in the early 20th century, the club brought together a small group of enthusiasts who explored caves across the Peak District and beyond.

The club’s original scrapbook offers a fascinating glimpse into the social history of caving, recording expeditions, members and adventures underground. The scrapbook was carefully passed from one elected custodian to the next, preserving the club’s story for generations.

Today, this remarkable surviving record provides an insight not only into early recreational caving, but also into the friendships, traditions and sense of adventure that brought these underground explorers together.

The temporary displays form part of the wider exhibition at Poole’s Cavern and are included with your cavern admission.
