Further Information

Clive John Beattie (1942–2023) was a prominent figure in Buxton, known for his intelligence, ambition, and contributions to the community. Born and raised in Buxton, he pursued higher education at the London School of Economics, which launched his career in business management. He worked for British Steel and later joined British Road Services, where he played a key role in its transformation into the National Freight Corporation (NFC). After retiring early due to the success of NFC’s privatisation, Clive returned to Buxton as a wealthy man and dedicated himself to local businesses and charities.

Clive is remembered for his instrumental role in revitalizing Buxton Opera House and his leadership as Chairman of the Buxton Civic Association (BCA) from 1996 to 2009. Under his guidance, BCA overcame financial struggles and transformed into a thriving organization. He recruited skilled professionals to the board, introduced specialist committees, and spearheaded initiatives to rejuvenate Poole’s Cavern, including expanding the visitor centre, adding a retail area and cafeteria, and installing state-of-the-art LED lighting. He also facilitated partnerships, such as leasing Grin Low woodland to Go-Ape, generating additional income.

Clive’s efforts led to significant financial growth for BCA, enabling the organisation to build reserves that proved vital during the COVID-19 pandemic. His vision and leadership ensured the survival and success of BCA, leaving a lasting legacy in Buxton.

Clive left a generous legacy from his estate to benefit the people of Buxton, and his family have asked BCA to propose an award, to be known as the Clive Beattie award.
